Essential oils don’t work.
No really, they don’t. Well, at least not ALL essential oils…
Let me explain.
My first experience with essential oils was a little bit of a turn off. Actually, a big turn off!
Let me start at the beginning…
It all started about 7 years ago when I started struggling with sleep. Most of the time I could fall asleep, but come 1 or 2 o’clock in the morning I felt wide awake. I couldn’t shut off my mind. I laid in bed stressing the fact I wasn’t sleeping. ?
After about a year, I was ready to do something about this sleeping issue.
I’ve always been interested in holistic remedies and natural alternatives. This, essential oils seemed like a logical place to start.
Enter essential oils. Well, at least what claimed to be “essential oils.”
About 6 years ago I first heard about essential oils. I saw them become more “mainstream” in health food stores and added to beauty products. I didn’t know too much about them. I heard oils were supposed to have health benefits. Also, I frequently heard the term aromatherapy.
Anyway, I decided to give them a try.
Trying to be helpful with my holistic quest for sleep, my mother-in-law bought me some products to try. She bought me an entire “sleep” product line that claimed to to be “aromatherapy sleep” from a popular bath and body store.
The products were marketed as night time aromatherapy to calm and comfort you before bed. The set came with a body wash & foam bath and body lotion. It advertised on the front label it contained cedarwood and Orange essential oils. On the back it even touted
“this aromatherapy blend of essential oils helps calm and comfort.”
Written in bold it read,
“Breathe deep for best results.”
It sounded perfect! I could take a shower before bed, get a little aromatherapy, and I’d sleep like a baby.
Well, not so much. I didn’t have as much trouble falling asleep (I’m sure the warm shower before bed helped). However, I still woke up in the middle of the night. Sadly, my sleep issues continued. ?
My first thought: I needed something to help me fall back to sleep when I woke up at night. I tried rubbing the “sleep lotion” on my body when I woke up in the middle of the night. I smelled very fragrant, but it didn’t help either.
Again trying to be helpful, my MIL bought me a sleep roller from the same bath and body store. This one claimed to be 100% essential oils (lavender oil this time). I rolled it on my wrists and temples before bed and I even tried using this when I woke up in the middle of the night. This sounded fancy and I hoped I would get better results… Nada. Nothing.
I was a victim of marketing tactics
As you can imagine, after this initial experience, I truly believed essential oils were purely for scent and didn’t have any therapeutic benefits. Aromatherapy Shmomatherapy.
I should explain that this was also before I was aware of the toxicity of many commercial bath and beauty products. I didn’t think to read the ingredients on the back of the lotion and body wash and see all the chemicals listed before essential oils. What can I say? I was a little naive about that stuff back then.
Looking into it now, I learned that that body wash, bubble bath, and body lotion I was using did have some essential oils in the ingredients (just way down low, after all sorts of chemicals and toxins including “fragrance (parfum))!”
So basically when I was trying to use something I thought was a “natural” remedy on my body was actually full of toxins and synthetics! ?
I totally fell victim to marketing tactics.
I also learned that many (sadly TONS) of essential oils are marketed as 100% pure essential oils when that is actually NOT the case. Additionally, the way many essential oils are obtained, stored, and transported does not seem clean and pure and I would not want to put those oils on my body. ?
I basically gave up on essential oils right then and had no interest in trying them anymore (since they obviously didn’t work).
Quality DOES matter
As you can imagine when I was first introduced to Young Living essential oils about a year ago, I was totally skeptical because my first experience with essential oils didn’t work at all. However I continued to hear good things about oils (even from people who weren’t selling them)?.
My interest was piqued again (I’m a sucker for holistic remedies), so I did some research.
What drew me to Young Living was their quality control. After my initial experience with oils, I was paranoid about them having toxins or impurities. After doing a little research, I could not find another company that could offer the same guarantee that the oils are pure and are as closely monitored and cared for like Young Living.
The Seed to Seal motto is legit. Young Living literally babies those oils, from seed to plant, to distillation, to bottling. I can be a little anal about wanting the best and making sure things are done right, so I like that they are anal about their oils!
Additionally, I love that they own their own farms or partner with farms, use only nonGMO seeds, and test their soil and water for chemicals to be sure everything that comes in contact with their plants are pure and toxin-free. I was hooked when I found out they even use their own oils instead of pesticides on their plants. So freaking awesome!
So yes, their quality attracted me big time!
Anyway, I finally gave Young Living oils a try and was AMAZED at their results! Unlike my previous experience, there were actual results.
Needless to say, I sleep now.
Yes, I sleep all night long and wake refreshed! All I am using is oils. I diffuse oils (Lavender, Cedarwood, & Vetiver) at night and I have a roller I rub on my feet (with the same blend with Grapeseed oil). I sometimes use the Tranquil roller on my wrists, temples, and back of neck if I’m having a difficult time quieting my mind before bed.
If I do wake up in the middle of the night (rare, but occasional), I roll my sleepy roller on my feet and I’m usually drifting back to sleepy town within a couple minutes.
What makes me sad was how long I went believing that essential oils didn’t work. It drives me crazy to think about how long I struggled with sleep and that it could have been treated naturally. Additionally, It really stinks that my initial experience was so bad that avoided all oils, even quality ones for years.
I wish I hadn’t blown off my friend that tried to introduce me to Young Living ages ago because I told her, “Oh yeah, I’ve tried essential oils, and I’m not interested.”
It’s not good to dwell on the past, so I’ll just say that I’m am so thankful I tried Young Living oils and I know that they will continue to be a big part of my future.
Be Wary of Low Quality Oils
If you’ve tried essential oils from Amazon, from a health food store, or even a bath and body store, you probably are not actually using pure therapeutic grade essential oils.
I wouldn’t be surprised if you also think essential oils don’t work!
I also wouldn’t be surprised if you weren’t impressed by essential oils, because I went through the same thing.
If these “fragrance oils” are the oils you are using or have tried, you’re right, those essential oils don’t work. They may smell nice, but they have NO therapeutic benefits.
However, before you claim that ALL essential oils don’t work, you need to give true, quality, 100% pure therapeutic grade essential oils a try. I guarantee you will be amazed.
Additionally, if you are using oils from Amazon, natural food stores, or bath and body stores, is also important to be careful. These oils may contain synthetic or added materials (like my initial experience).
It is important to be aware that quality does matter when it comes to essential oils. If you want to learn more about the quality control behind Young Living essential oils, check out my Seed to Seal video.
